Svend Bayer – Ceramicist Extrodinare

To a packed out audience Svend showed us his beautiful film which captured the story behind the man and his pots.

When Svend returned to the UK from studying in Japan his aim was to create utensils for everyday use at a reasonable price, however, with a family to support and with the change in the way we now view ceramics, he turned to making pots.  Filmed at his studio in Sheepwash, we were able to see Svend create his beautiful pieces.  A rare treat, as when they are being fired in the kiln over the five days, Svend doesn’t like to have any distractions, so no guests are allowed.   What came out of the film and the Q&A that followed was his passion for his work – his pots were almost like his children, to be nurtured and looked after until they come out of the kiln, no one ever the same.

Svend’s work is currently on exhibition at Sladers Yard until 6th November 2011.
