Effra are a folk trio playing original traditional-sounding tunes with a bold contemporary twist. Fiddle, mandolin, accordion and guitar intertwine using a variety of influences that sound like a journey across Europe, collecting tunes from many cultures and melding them seamlessly into new and beautiful music.
Winners Bath Folk Festival ‘New Shoots Award’ 2012
The trio are Alex Bishop (guitar), Tom Newell (fiddle, mandolin) and Aidan Shepherd (accordian). Heralding from Bath, Shrewsbury and Canterbury respectively, they met in London in 2011. Although coming from predominantly rock, classical and jazz backgrounds, a strong connection was quickly formed, and they began meeting regularly to write and develop music that shared a common ground. The quality of their compositions and the high energy of their performances make a heady mix.
“Effra combine great technical skill with creative and passionate arrangements on fiddle, guitar and piano accordion. They play their own compositions inspired by Celtic and European traditions, with harmonic elements drawn from their experiences in playing jazz and classical music. A trio of the highest order that, despite their young age, sound like they have always sat comfortably among the greatest of the folk scene.” – Bath Folk Festival
