This year Philip Sutton RA has moved with his wife Heather to live in Bridport. To welcome such a distinguished and fascinating artist, Sladers Yard is showing paintings from throughout his long life alongside woodcuts, painted ceramics, books, cards and more in a major selling exhibition which opens for his 86th birthday.
Philip Sutton will give a TALK at 6.30pm on Friday 7 November. Two short films will be shown and there will be time to ask questions. An informal buffet dinner will be served after the talk. Tickets: £10 or £25 with dinner. This promises to be a most entertaining and illuminating evening.
In his mid-eighties Philip Sutton RA still paints and draws every day as he has all his life. His work is full of bright colour, painted with a freedom and clarity reminiscent of Matisse but entirely his own. His subject matter varies from landscapes, flowers, portraits and nudes but is always treated with wonder, and made wonderful by his brush. As The Times art critic John Russell Taylor wrote, ‘All you need to understand and appreciate Philip Sutton is a lively eye and open mind. You do not have to make your way painfully towards him: his art will welcome you with open arms.’
The exhibition will open at 10am on Saturday 18 October and will be open every day until Sunday 30th November. Please call 01308 459511 or email firstname.lastname@example.org with any enquiries. The paintings and woodcuts in the show can be viewed here.
