Alex Lowery’s recent paintings reach further afield with new colours and new energy. Paintings of river estuaries, bridges and buildings in Barnstaple and Topsham add to Alex Lowery’s vocabulary of subject matter refreshing also the Portland and West Bay paintings so many of us know and love. His subtle and surprising colour combinations, dramatic tonal differences and the manmade structures set against luminous sky and water work their magic as ever.
Alex Lowery’s bold new work explores estuaries and tidal waters. Balancing stillness with constant flux, the natural world with man’s interventions, Alex Lowery’s nuanced eye creates poetry from flood planes, reedbeds and road bridges. Sluice gates alter the flow and provide structure and geometry to soft-coloured painterly pictures of Topsham. As your eye follows the strong horizontal line of the Medieval bridge at Barnstaple, you realise that the painting is constructed just as the landscape is – the built environment and beyond it the farmed hillside with hedges, fields and woodland.
In Portland, motifs recur in different keys. The crisp marching rooflines of the Olympic village form a foreground to lyrical contours in the Chesil Beach stretching away behind. An angled lamppost draws your eye from the heavenly blue mound of the distant quarry with its pitted top to the roughly drawn castellated edge of a street wall. Energy and movement are achieved within these paintings through the use of colour contrast and gently rhyming forms. In a one-off large painting of Wynford Eagle, the viewpoint soars above the contours of a West Dorset village. Unusually for Lowery, this ambiguous intriguing painting shows the manor house and chapel nestling into woodland while the sloping contours of ploughed fields and ancient strip lynchets fall away below a winding lane. Improvising and distilling, Alex Lowery’s gentle clear-sighted paintings throw radiant light on our use of the land.
Born 1957 in London, Alex Lowery studied at Bath Academy, Sir John Cass School of Art and the Central School of Art in London. He has painted and shown regularly in Dorset and London since 1994. He exhibitied for many years with Art First in London and has shown at the Estorick Collection and at Browse and Darby. His work is in many distinguished private collections as well as the Dorset County Hospital Art Collection, Great Ormond Street Hospital, St George’s Hospital Tooting and the Fidelity International Art Collection. He lives in Charmouth with the artist Vanessa Gardiner.
