Surrounded by his thrilling exhibition of sea paintings and works on paper, Tom Hammick will show slides of work by his artistic heroes and talk about art in general as well as his own work, techniques and ideas. The show he has curated at the Towner Gallery Eastbourne entitled Towards Night opens on 24 September and features 60 of those heroes exploring the nocturnal including Samuel Palmer, Blake, Constable, Caspar David Friedrich, Munch, Chagall and Peter Doig. In addition Tom Hammick is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Painting and Printmaking at the University of Brighton and Visiting Lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Ulster and at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University).
Also an aficionado of the Northern Romantic tradition, Ivan Samarine, director of the Russian Art Consultancy in London, is a name well known to those interested in Russian art. For years he ran the Russian department at Sotheby’s with his late business partner John Stuart, where they built up the Russian market and raised the international profile of Russian art.
