PJ Harvey – Orlam
PJ Harvey needs no introduction. In her book Orlam, drawing on rituals, children’s songs, chants and superstitions of the rural West Country, 9 year old Ira-Abel creates the twin realm through which she can make sense of an increasingly confusing and frightening world. The result is a poem-sequence of light and shadow. Written in Dorset dialect, Orlam reveals PJ Harvey as not only a talented songwriter, but a gifted poet – whose formal skill, and transforming eye and ear, has produced a strange and moving poem like no other. In conversation with Greta Stoddart.
